Existing research shows that commercial insurers pay hospitals approximately 250 percent of Medicare rates on average for their employer-sponsored (ESI) plans.1, 2 However, prior research has not evaluated whether ESI plans rely on Medicare’s payment system but with a multiplier, so that the markup is similar across various services.
