Alabama legislators on Tuesday approved a bill that would ban almost all abortions in the state, with no exceptions for cases of rape or incest.
Under the bill, which now goes to Republican Gov. Kay Ivey for her signature, an abortion would only be legal if the pregnant person's life is at risk. A doctor who performs an abortion for any other reason could face up to 99 years in prison. Some say doctors will be too worriedabout criminal penalties to perform abortions even under those circumstances.
