In 2016, Jamie Shupe, a biological male, made international headlines after an Oregon judge granted him legal status as a "nonbinary" person, legally shedding gender designations that he felt oppressed his true identity as a woman. He had become the first American granted this legal status.
Just three years later, Shupe has renounced his former life, which he now characterizes as a "sham."
