After World War II, America faced a severe shortage of primary care. Today, history repeats itself in the form of a national dental crisis. There are 5,493 dental health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) nationwide, in which there are more than 5000 patients per dentist. While lawmakers and dental professionals explore ways to expand access to care, some states are looking to the past for solutions.
