Advocates of medical aid in dying have worked for years to extend access to a practice that allows terminally ill patients to use medication end their lives – a mission certain to be complicated if Neil Gorsuch is confirmed to the Supreme Court.

After logging legislative victories in states in recent years, advocates have set their sights on improving access by allowing the lethal medication to be paid for by taxpayer funding and health insurance, and by setting limits on the recognition of religious objections.
