One thing we ought to avoid doing in the next few months is fiddling with Medicare. Medicare is the model ACA should have used for a public option, which would have insured many more working Americans at a far lower price. But Medicare works because it is easy to enroll in, and its cost structure is carefully calibrated so providers and other health care companies will participate, even at reduced costs.
