Yet Americans seem to be collectively in denial about those statistics. In a poll taken by Gallup in November 2015, only 37 percent of Americans said they were somewhat or very overweight – with 56 percent saying their weight was about right.
The reason could be that our sense of what’s normal has expanded along with our waistlines. As a new graphic by Nathan Yau of Flowing data shows, the collective weight of Americans has grown rapidly in past decades.
