Durbin Introduces Bill to Prevent Opioid Addiction

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced legislation Thursday that aims to prevent opioid addiction. It would also hold drug makers financially responsible for the opioid epidemic, an idea popular among Democrats.

Durbin introduced the bill the same day the Senate announced which of its members will be participating in a conference over opioid legislation with the House. The bill would make drug manufacturers establish a national drug disposal program and help fund substance abuse treatment programs.

It’s unlikely drug makers will be held financially accountable through the legislation currently being considered by Congress, but Durbin and other Democrats have said before this is not the end of Congress’s work on the opioid issue.
