Insurer Offers $5K for Kidney Donor Travel Costs

The nation’s largest health insurer said it will pay up to $5,000 in travel expenses for people donating kidneys to its health plan members as a way to improve care and reduce the huge cost of dialysis and related treatment.

UnitedHealth Group and its Optum health services business disclosed that its customers are sometimes dying or often racking up nearly $800,000 in costs while on dialysis an average of three and one-half years prior to a kidney transplant.
