Lawmakers Hail Opioid Rules, Call for More

Lawmakers are supporting tough federal regulations to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic sweeping the nation, though some say the new changes are not enough.

In 2014 more than 47,000 Americans died of a drug overdose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deaths from opioids, which include prescription pain medication and the street drug heroin, increased from 57 per day in 2010 to 78 per day in 2014.
