New Kind of Worker May Keep Patients Healthier

Atkinson is a community health worker, a growing category of lay workers who often come from the same sorts of neighborhoods as their clients. Now 37, she was in and out of shelters with her mother as a child.

The hope is that workers like Atkinson can communicate more effectively than professionals long steeped in medical jargon. That may help them uncover and remove barriers to health that doctors don't know about.
