Need a knee or hip replacement? Get in line.
The number of operations are soaring, ranging from about 1,000 operations a year at Oregon Health & Science University to 1,800 for Kaiser Permanente, 2,500 at Legacy Health and more than 3,000 at Providence Health & Services facilities in Oregon.
Across the country, knee replacements nearly doubled between 2000 and 2010 to almost 720,000 operations, and hip replacements rose even more to 330,000 procedures, according to the latest statistics by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
