Family-run farms and independent doctors' practices were once both staples of daily American life. But shifting market dynamics in recent decades have left small self-run farms with a diminishing set of choices: Expand aggressively, sell to a bigger corporate farming conglomerate or try to find a way to stand out. The simplest choice in many cases has been bowing out of the marketplace. And now, independent physicians are feeling the same squeeze.
