UPMC, Highmark Divorce Ends with Key Ruling

Seniors with Highmark’s Medicare Advantage plan coverage will continue to have in-network access to UPMC hospitals and doctors, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday, marking the final break in relations between the two health care giants.

The ruling means that some 182,000 Highmark seniors who use UPMC facilities will not have to pay higher, out-of-network rates through June 2019, the end of the consent decree between Highmark and UPMC. The ruling came barely a week before Dec. 7, the end of the open enrollment period for Medicare Advantage.
