Highmark Inc. violated a contract with UPMC over payments for chemotherapy, an arbitration panel has ruled, meaning the health insurer must now pay millions of dollars for past claims by its members for cancer care.
The panel specifically awarded UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Hospital $24 million for treating Highmark members with cancer since April 2014, but both sides have agreed to determine the total amount owed to all UPMC hospitals. In a regulatory filing Tuesday, UPMC said the total could top $188 million.
