The problem often occurs because patients begin treatment with a doctor in a hospital who accepts their insurance. But, if someone else comes in to help who isn’t in the insurance network, the patient is likely to end up with a separate bill from that provider.
"It’s often a really unwelcome surprise and it can really blow a hole in a family’s finances when you get a bill that can be thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands of dollars," explained Jesse O’Brien, policy director with the consumer advocacy group OSPIRG.
